So you see bat feces and they make you think of rodent feces? Well, that is not odd since rat feces and bat feces do resemble one another a lot. There are some ways that bat feces and rat feces differ and that is how brittle rat feces are! Turns out, that if you step on them, they will disintegrate into a fine dust that would be perfect as fertilizer, but these are the particles that you do not want to be breeding in at all. Another way to discern bat feces is to look closely. They glisten a bit. This is because of what bats eat. Bats are insectivores which means they have an insect-rich diet. Now about the shiny parts, these are actually wings that were undigested as well as other body parts.

So what should you do when you see bat feces?

The first thing you feel like doing maybe is to pick it up, but one cannot just simply scoop up the feces like that. Spores and other airborne particles might get released and inhaled. Ventilate the space properly and have the right gear.  The way to clean up bat feces properly is to wet them first so that these particles have no chance of getting airborne.

Use water to dampen these feces. Once wettened, they can be picked up by a sturdy tissue. Make sure to wear gloves and a mask while doing this. Now to disinfect the surface, you want to mix 9 parts water with 1 part bleach and spray it on the surface and let it soak in for at least 10 minutes before wiping it off. As mentioned earlier, bat feces particles might become airborne and the reason for so much caution is because symptoms might be so severe that hospitalization is a real consequence.

These are the symptoms that you might get:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Dry cough/cough with blood in the chronic phase
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches
  • Chest discomfort
  • Pain in the joints
