Squirrel Removal From Roof Vent – Peterborough

Job Overview

Location: Peterborough, Ontario
Structure: Detached bungalow
Problem: Wildlife activity reported in the attic consistent with squirrel entry
Service: Squirrel removal and roofline exclusion
Visits: 2

Summary

Our team completed a two-visit squirrel removal service at a detached bungalow in Peterborough. Activity was traced to damaged roof vent openings and adjacent soffit intersections. Humane one-way exclusion and permanent roofline screening were installed, followed by confirmation that the attic remained inactive before final sealing.

Background / Property Context

The home is a detached bungalow with multiple roof vents and standard asphalt shingles. Roofline features, including vents and soffit intersections, provided potential access points for wildlife. Work was completed in March, with winter conditions not affecting access or installation.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported hearing wildlife activity in the attic during the morning hours. The timing and location of the noise suggested squirrel movement within the roof structure.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial exterior roof inspection, our technician identified damage around a roof vent consistent with squirrel entry. Openings were visible at the vent edges and at soffit intersections, creating direct access into the attic space. No additional active entry points were observed elsewhere on the roof at the time of inspection.

Cause Analysis

Squirrels commonly target roof vents and soffit intersections where materials are thinner or weathered. Repeated climbing and gnawing can enlarge small gaps over time. Once compromised, these openings allow direct access into attic spaces, particularly on low-slope bungalow roofs.

Treatment / Removal

A humane, non-lethal exclusion process was used. A one-way door was installed at the identified entry point to allow squirrels to exit the attic while preventing re-entry. This approach allows animals to leave on their own without being trapped or harmed.

Exclusion & Repairs

Following successful exclusion, permanent prevention work was completed:

  • Installation of a squirrel one-way door during the initial exclusion phase
  • Installation of seven galvanized steel roof vent covers
  • Sealing of two soffit intersections using galvanized steel mesh
All materials were mechanically fastened and integrated with existing roof components to maintain airflow while preventing wildlife access.

Outcome & Confirmation

On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further attic activity. The one-way door was removed, sealed, and the exclusion work was inspected in full. No new openings or signs of wildlife presence were observed, and the roofline remained secure at completion.

Technician Notes

The work was completed by our technician, Grant, who conducted both the initial inspection and the follow-up confirmation visit. All wildlife removal and exclusion measures were carried out humanely and designed for long-term prevention.
