Job Overview
Location: Peterborough, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-story house
Problem: Wildlife activity reported in attic consistent with squirrel presence
Service: Squirrel removal and exterior exclusion
Visits: Two
Summary
Our team responded to a report of early-morning attic noise at a detached two-story home in Peterborough. A full roofline inspection identified soffit-level entry points consistent with squirrel activity. Humane one-way exclusion was installed, followed by permanent sealing and confirmation of resolution on a return visit.
Background / Property Context
The property is a two-story detached house with multiple roofline transitions, soffit intersections, and winter exposure. Snow and cold conditions were present at the time of service, requiring careful access and staged work.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported repeated wildlife noise from the attic during morning hours, raising concerns about squirrels entering through the roof or soffit areas.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, our technician completed a full exterior roof inspection. Activity was traced to soffit intersections where gaps were present. These openings provided sufficient access for squirrels to enter the attic space.
Cause Analysis
Squirrels commonly target soffit intersections and roofline transitions, particularly where materials separate over time. Seasonal pressure during winter increases attic entry attempts as animals seek shelter. Elevated rooflines and overlapping construction features can make these areas vulnerable if not reinforced.
Treatment / Removal
A humane, non-lethal squirrel removal process was implemented. A one-way door was installed over the primary soffit entry point, allowing squirrels to exit while preventing re-entry. This approach ensured the animals could leave safely without being trapped inside the structure.
Exclusion & Repairs
Galvanized steel mesh was installed to seal approximately three feet of affected soffit area, reinforcing the vulnerable sections identified during inspection. All materials were secured to withstand weather exposure and prevent future access.
Photos taken during service show steel screening fastened along soffit edges and roofline intersections, with mesh contoured to fit beneath shingles and fascia where required.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. The one-way door was removed, sealed permanently, and all exclusion work was re-inspected. No signs of continued squirrel presence were observed, and the exclusion remained intact.
Technician Notes
The work was completed over two visits due to winter conditions. Grant conducted the inspection, installed the one-way door, completed soffit screening, and confirmed successful exclusion on the follow-up visit.
