Squirrel Attic Entry Sealed via Roofline Exclusion in Peterborough

Job Overview

Location: Peterborough, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey residential home with attached double garage
Problem: Nighttime wildlife activity reported in the attic
Service: Squirrel removal and roofline exclusion
Visits: Two visits

Summary

Our team responded to reports of nighttime attic activity at a detached home in Peterborough. An exterior roof inspection identified soffit intersection vulnerabilities that had been disturbed by wildlife. While initial concern was raccoon activity, the openings were consistent with squirrel access. Humane one-way removal and full roofline exclusion were completed over two visits, followed by confirmation of no further activity.

Background / Property Context

The property is a modern two-storey detached home with multiple rooflines, soffit intersections, and standard roof vent penetrations. These architectural features can create entry opportunities when materials are stressed or displaced by wildlife activity.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported repeated sounds coming from the attic during nighttime hours, suggesting active wildlife presence above the living space.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial visit, our technician conducted a full exterior roof inspection. Disturbance was observed at soffit intersection points. While the damage was not large enough to allow raccoon entry, it was sufficient for squirrel access. Roof vents were also identified as potential secondary entry points due to their exposed placement.

Cause Analysis

Soffit intersections and roof penetrations are common vulnerability points on residential structures. Repeated wildlife pressure at these junctions can widen small gaps over time. In this case, attempted access by larger wildlife likely compromised the area, allowing squirrels to exploit the opening for attic entry.

Treatment / Removal

A humane, non-lethal squirrel removal process was implemented. One-way doors were installed at the identified soffit entry points, allowing squirrels to exit the attic while preventing re-entry. This approach ensured the animals could vacate safely without being trapped inside the structure.

Exclusion & Repairs

As part of the approved scope of work, seven galvanized steel roof vent covers were installed to secure all exposed vent openings. The one-way doors were later removed, and the soffit areas were professionally sealed and reinforced to restore the building envelope and prevent future access.

Outcome & Confirmation

At the follow-up visit, the homeowner reported no further wildlife activity. All one-way doors were removed, sealed areas were inspected, and the roofline exclusion was confirmed to be intact. No additional wildlife issues have been reported since completion.

Technician Notes

Grant performed both visits, completing a full roof inspection, humane squirrel eviction, and permanent exclusion work. Weather conditions in March did not limit access or installation, allowing all planned work to be completed safely and effectively.
